Earrings are one of the oldest forms of jewellery known, and have been worn by both men and women for millennia. Some conservative groups believe men shouldn’t wear jewellery but, in fact, archeological evidence suggests that men in the ancient city of Persepolis wore earrings. This dates back to 550-330BC, so men’s jewellery is not a modern trend at all. The popularity of earrings for women has waxed and waned with fashion, and in the 18th century, women traditionally wore bonnets, so earrings were redundant.

In the 19th century, women started wearing their hair up and earrings reappeared until strict Victorian morals took hold and wearing decorative ear jewellery was considered to be a vulgar practice. In the early 20th century, clip-on earrings dominated and the trend towards ear-piercing only took hold in the 1950’s, in the USA at least.
