Birthstones are specific gems that represent a person’s month of birth. The custom of wearing a single birthstone is barely a few centuries old, although a Josephus, a first century historian believed in a connection between the twelve stones in Aaron’s breastplate, signifying the tribes of Israel (and described in the Book of Exodus).
The current list of birthstones, as we know it, dates back only to 1912 when the National Association of Jewelers in America met and attempted to standardise the list. The most recent addition to the list was in 2002 when tanzanite was added as a December birthstone.
