Titanium has been widely used in commercial applications for a number of years and is also still exceptionally popular in the jewellery industry.  Most noteworthy is the growth of the men’s titanium wedding ring market, as a result of titanium’s unique physical properties. 

Why titanium?

Titanium is an inert metal, meaning that it is chemically inactive and consequently does not react with other elements.  The primary advantage of this characteristic is that titanium will never tarnish or discolour, like silver will.  This inert character also means that titanium is a hypoallergenic metal and is probably the best metal for people with sensitive skin.  It is also resistant to salt-water and acid corrosion, hence is thus perfect for wear on a daily basis.  Titanium will not cause irritation or discolouration of the skin. Titanium’s remarkable strength belies its light-weight feel.  With a strength comparable to steel, titanium is as light as aluminium so it’s even more comfortable to wear than tungsten.

What designs are available?

Coloured titanium rings are becoming more popular in the market place.  A wide range of colours can be produced by a process called anodizing whereby a layer of titanium dioxide is created.  The resultant colour of the titanium dioxide depends on the voltage of the electrical current applied to the titanium. While this surface colouring is not permanent, it can be re-done should a client wish.
