Russian mining company Alrosa, the world’s largest diamond producer of diamonds by carat, has announced the discovery of a 27.85ct pink diamond. Typically, natural pink diamonds are mined mostly in Australia with some significant discoveries in Africa. Previously the largest pink diamond found in Russia was less than 4cts in weight.
This large gem quality pink diamond was found in Russia’s Far East alluvial diamond mines and measures 22.47 mm x 15.69 mm x 10.9 mm in size. If Alrosa decides to cut the stone prior to selling it, it could become the company’s most expensive polished diamond.
Pink diamonds are currently reaching some of the highest prices ever on auction. In April this year Sotheby’s auctioned the 59.6ct “Pink Star” for a record $71.2milion, making it officially the world’s most expensive diamond.
