Gem Diamonds recovered a 185 carat rough white diamond from its Letšeng mine in Lesotho at the end of October 2010. The diamond is the second of two large white stones recovered from Letšeng in the past two months after the company recovered a 196-carat white diamond from the mine in August.
Gem Diamonds noted that unlike other significant diamonds recovered from Letšeng's satellite pipe, this diamond was found in Letšeng's larger main pipe. This indicates that the main pipe has the ability to produce very large quality diamonds, Gem Diamonds said.
"Letšeng is one of the world's truly extraordinary diamond mines and its reputation is well deserved given the frequency with which it produces remarkable diamonds, including the latest two exceptional diamonds of 196 and 185 carats, as well as three of the world's twenty largest recorded diamonds since Gem Diamonds acquired the mine in 2006," said clifford Elphick, Gem Diamonds chief executive. "Management remains focused on its strategy to substantially expand production at Letšeng in order to maximize value and increase the returns from this world class asset."
Early examinations of the stone indicated that it will yield top color and top clarity polished diamonds and as a result is expected to achieve a substantial price per carat.
